Rooms feature tatami-mat flooring, comfortable futon bedding and paper sliding screens. They are fitted with an LCD TV and a safe. Bathroom facilities are shared, and the public baths are open 16:00-22:00 and 06:00-09:00 daily. Staying at Eko-in was an exceptional and unforgettable experience. I highly recommend booking the Okunoin cemetery night tour—it was both atmospheric and deeply moving. The meals are fully vegetarian and beautifully presented. If you're not a fan of tofu, some of the dinner dishes might not be to your taste—but that, too, is part of the cultural and spiritual experience. I was initially anxious about sleeping on a traditional futon, but it turned out to be surprisingly comfortable and added to the overall sense of authenticity. A truly unique stay.

Offering a garden and garden view, 高野山 宿坊 龍泉院 -Koyasan Shukubo Ryusenin- is set in Koyasan, 45 km from Matsushita Park and 47 km from Kii Fudoki No Oka Museum of Archaeology and Folklore. Offering free private parking, the 3-star ryokan is 38 km from Kishi Station. Subaru Hall is 48 km away and Jigenin Temple is 49 km from the ryokan. Amazing place to stay. The morning prayer was definitely a highlight. Loved all of it. The temple is beautiful, with amazing gardens. The room was also very nice, spacious and well equipped. Staff was very kind. Dinner was served in a private dining room, the food was very nice (but if you cant eat Japanese food definitely bring something to eat as you cant buy anything at the temple). The onsen was modern and clean, men and women are separated. Thank you very much, would definitely recommend!

Situated in Hongu, 14 km from Hosshinmon Oji Shrine and 21 km from Kumanokodo Nakahechi Museum of Art, Guest House Takiyoshi offers free WiFi and air conditioning. It is set 26 km from Kumanoshi Kiwakozan Museum and features a lift. Shingu Castle Ruins Park is 37 km away and Fudarakusanji Temple is 47 km from the ryokan.

An Asian breakfast is available at the property and includes warm dishes and local specialities. The ryokan is located in a geothermal area, with a number of hot springs nearby for guests to relax in. This hotel is run by the kindest couple, and I’m still thinking about how good dinner and breakfast were. Some of the best meals of my trip! You can also order lunch for the trail. The onsen was wonderful after a long day hiking. Room was on the 3rd floor and very quiet, it was compact and simple, very clean, with everything you might need, including yukatas for dinner and towels for the onsen. Shared toilets and sinks in the hall were never busy; there are two communal showers inside the onsen. I asked about laundry and they took mine and washed it for me within a few hours! The bus stop to Shingu or Hongu was a one-minute walk from the hotel. Yunomine Onsen was such a unique town, I feel lucky to have stayed here and enjoyed such great hospitality!

39 km from Kishi Station in Koyasan, 高野山 宿坊 光明院 -Koyasan Shukubo Komyoin- provides accommodation with access to a hot tub. It is situated 45 km from Matsushita Park and offers luggage storage space. The ryokan features rooms with air conditioning, free private parking and free WiFi.

At the ryokan, every unit is equipped with a tatami and a shared bathroom. It was such an amazing, unique experience. The monks are most welcoming and accommodating. Ryokan style rooms with futons, which can be a bit hard, as expected (part of the experience). The place looks incredible, still attains so much history and ancient culture within its walls. It was incredible to be a part of that for a bit and attending the ceremonies was the highlight of our stay.

Located in Tanabe, 12 km from Hosshinmon Oji Shrine, Minshuku Sumiya offers accommodation with a public bath. With an open-air bath, the 2-star ryokan has air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi, each with a shared bathroom. The ryokan features a hot spring bath and a housekeeping service. I loved staying here and it was one of my favorite places I stayed while hiking the Kumano Kodo. The owner is a cool, laidback guy. He gave me a tour of everything when I arrived. We had access to robes for the onsens, a massage chair, and delicious coffee. The vegan bento box I received for lunch was wonderful! Plus, my room had a river view.

Offering a garden and garden view, 高野山 宿坊 不動院 -Koyasan Shukubo Fudoin- is located in Koyasan, 45 km from Matsushita Park and 47 km from Subaru Hall. Providing free private parking, the 3-star ryokan is 38 km from Kishi Station. The ryokan features family rooms. From the reception to the checkout, everything was perfect. The monks were friendly and extremely helpful as well as being discrete. The complex is set back from the road so it is really peaceful. Dinner is served around 17:30 and is absolutely delicious. You are in a private room screened off from the other guests. The dinner is a highlight of the stay in Koya-san. I would just advise that this experience is not really recommended for younger kids and teenagers with limited food options. Dressing up in a yukata may be fun but a 9pm curfew and peaceful atmosphere isn't conducive to rest and relaxation either for them or the other guests. If you intend to do the night tour of the cemetery just remember the curfew. In summer nightfall is around 7:30. Before breakfast we participated in the morning service with everything explained in English A unique experience on Koya-san and an interesting insight into Buddhist practice.
