We loved river island and would definitely come back. We had a very authentic, homely and warm experience. The family that own and run River Island went to great lengths to ensure that we enjoyed our stay. Nothing was too much trouble for them. It is set in beautiful natural surroundings right on the river which we swam in every day. The food at the restaurant was delicious and very fresh. We were sad to leave and are already looking forward to our next stay.

Everything was absolutely perfect from start to finish. The staff is incredibly welcoming, warm, and kind. They went above and beyond to help us with every single request — truly amazing service. We were able to rent scooters directly from the hotel, do our laundry, and even cook the fish we caught! A magical memory: they prepared everything for us so we could enjoy it like in a restaurant. The rooms are very comfortable and nicely decorated. The location is great — perfect for exploring the area. The pool is stunning, always clean, and perfect for relaxing at any time of the day. And the food! You can eat and drink on-site all day long, and everything is fresh, delicious, and generous. Honestly, an incredible place — our absolute favorite in Bali. If you’re in the area, don’t think twice — just go!

Catherine the owner was absolutely fantastic. Absolutely nothing was too much trouble for her or her amazing staff. Food was superb and breakfast was available any time you wanted it. Breakfast was also exceptionally good. Our room was stunning with everything we could possibly need. We will definitely return if we are in Bali. What a beautiful place! Very comfortable and elegant rooms, decorated with lots of good taste. The restaurant serves amazing food. And the staff is super friendly and efficient. This is not a 5-star hotel, so it would not be fair to rate it like one. That means, this accommodation is maybe not perfect, but in this category it outstands other facilities of the same category. I read more reviews about older equipment in the rooms, but in our room everything was good and without any damage - maybe they renewed in the meantime. We extended our stay 2 times, because it was so nice here. The location is very good, it is quite a calm area with a very nice beach with perfect sand and everything was clean here. The pool with a sea view is a perfect add on, also a massage table right at the beachfront. The best thing was a restaurant right at the sea, with a very good choices of meals and cocktails and affordable prices. We tried 4 different locations at Bali, but this accommodation was a very good choice in this price category. I believe this is the best choice in this region. As a bonus, there is a scooter rental office right in the neighborhood and the roads in this region are safer and not so dense than around Denpasar. So you can easily explore the surroundings with a scooter.

The view from the villa above the rice fields and from refreshing infinite pool was just what we needed after few hours of driving to this gorgeous place. Everything clean, staff so welcoming and helpfull. Great romantic dinner in restaurant. Higly recommended. We stayed just one night, but if you could extend it to at least two to enjoy all those walks around.

Loved Amed but was only there for 2 nights, would definately...

Loved Amed but was only there for 2 nights, would definately go back for longer. Beautiful people and amazing local food. Great spot if you dont want the hussle and bussle of Kuta/Seminyak or Legian. The black beach was gorgeous and the sunsets were amazing, Great place for divers/snorkelling and fishing.

The best restaurant in Indonesia is the Asri in this hotel. The food is outrageously good and quite inexpensive! The hotel is gorgeous with great views from every cottage. The service is amazing and the staff quickly learn your name and what you like/don't like. I was not bothered by insects at this hotel at all. Highly recommend for a splurge!

Padang bai is a transit town for the ferries.

Padang bai is a transit town for the ferries. There are plenty of eateries around. The beach is unfortunately littered with rubbish and stray dogs roam around. It’s not somewhere to stay for long. There is a dive centre so it might be good for that, but for me as a general tourist I wouldn’t take a holiday here. I just stayed for the fast boats.

I have been travelling around Bali for some time and I have come to a conclusion. Bali is about Earth Energy and there are 4 elements in which it excels. Central Bali, Ubud and heading North for Jungle Energy....intense and slightly chaotic. The Peninsula for expansive Ocean Energy, connecting you to something bigger, and Rock Energy...grounding, stabilising. Then you have Candidasa. Candidasa is the Energy of the Hills, the Green Healing Hills. Take your bike off the main road and you will be driving closer and closer to the foot, then keep driving, up and up, for absolutely breath taking views of dense greenery with traditional structures scattered in the distance. Breathtaking.

A little village with one main street.

A little village with one main street. Lots of diving opportunities. There was a 3 day festival happening when we were here that had a night market and dancing, including a fire dance. We got to mingle with the locals, kind folk, which was nice. It's a pretty easy scoot to some of the temples, rice fields, waterfalls, beaches, and attractions in the area. Decent local restaurants, good massages, good accessible shore dives. Easy enough to find a scooter rental for 70k-85k per day, ask the owner of where you're staying. During our stay in late October, there was a lot of haze in the air (maybe from burning?) so unfortunately, there weren't good sunrises or sunsets.

It is close to the mother temple of Bali (15 minutes), Blue lagoon diving and Snorkeling, p Pura Tirta and the most amazing rafting site. So a 3-night stay at this place is ideal to cover east Bali and then you can go to Ubud.

We stayed just one night to visit the Gates of Heaven.

We stayed just one night to visit the Gates of Heaven. I feel is enough to see the surroundings and have a feel of the place. We found the tickets a bit expensive. I mean is a nice place but not to pay 10$. You can see Tirtagangga in 20 minutes, depending on whether you are an instagramer and you take selfies in every corner, then you can stay there for over an hour, although is very difficult to take good selfies as there are people everywhere. Around the entrance, there are a few restaurants and shops. But please I would say to the owners or whoever takes care of this place, tell people not to feed the fish. They are huge! and it's because the shops nearby sell food so you can take a picture with the fish.

Seraya is definitely a place to recommend. If you are looking for authenticity, pristine beaches (Virgin beach), local culture (Lempuyang Temple, Tirta Gangga Water Palace & Local Coffee Farm, etc.), you will definitely love the place!

Besakih accommodations have a beautiful location in small village, with amazing views across the valleys. The hike of Mount Agung is challenging in all possible ways and attempting during day time (heat- a big part is without shade) or without a guide in our opinion is dangerous. If travelling to Besakih you might consider having a car or motorbike as there are a lot of dogs on the street that bark and approach you unfriendly. we managed to use the transport from the accommodation. The Besakih Temple is mind blowing, the guide we had was very knowledgeable and very good at his job. Would strongly recommend visiting besakih for a minimum of 3 nights.

Amed was lovely, found some great eating places that were...

Amed was lovely, found some great eating places that were really reasonable. Gusto, Galangal, Warranga Amed with live music and fabulous hosts, Sunset view restaurant )the lower key more traditional one) the other Sunset view was too upmarket and commercialised. We loved riding around on the scooters and felt it was quiet enough to feel safe. Really enjoyed getting up into the hills from there to see the rural lifestyles.
