The property was without doubt one of the most aesthetically considered hotels we’ve been to. The decor (from the artwork to the furniture to the cutlery) was beautiful and incredibly detail oriented, with a local Guatemala / Mayan theme. The setting was even better, with great views over the lake and nicely nestled into the hills. The staff were fantastic and couldn’t do enough for you. Definitely visit Casa Palopo if you’re visiting Atitlan.

This is a gem. One of our favorite places to stay over 4 months travel to Central America. The location is amazing, in a small town that sees very little tourism, at the foot of Attilan volcano and right on the lake. The grounds are gorgeous, with a lovely pool and fantastic organic garden and plenty of hammocks. The restaurant is fabulous, we loved everything we ate, from the well served breakfasts to tasty and fresh salads, soups and fish, with almost everything sourced in their own organic garden. The staff are all kind and helpful and very well trained (the waiters also double as guides for the hikes which is nice). There seems to be real pride in working here.

Very nice stay at this beautiful hotel! Breathtaking views everywhere in the property and its surroundings, very nice place to swim at this part of the lake, friendly staff, and also lovely plants and flowers in the hotel property. We often got some delicious fruit shakes to cool down after swimming and spending time in the sun. Would come back!

Loved that the hotel is super traditional and offers temazcal, a very authentic Guatemalan sauna experience. Staff were great organizing a guide for a sunrise hike up to the Mayan nose viewpoint. They were also super accommodating about having to change dates twice. Really enjoyed their typical Guatemalan breakfast as well.

Lovely hotel in gritty, fascinating Santiago which we loved. Small kitchen that you can cook in. Clean pool and nice garden with several spots to chill out and a view from the roof. The hotel looks like it's been extended over the years and I think the new rooms are probably brighter than those on the ground floor. Our room was definitely a little dark, but it was clean and comfortable. Josefa and the women working in the hotel were all lovely. There was lots to see and do in Santiago. Great birding and we saw a quetzal

Great sized room. Good pool and access to the lake. Loved the Temezcal / sauna. Gardens were pretty. Staff super helpful and friendly. Didn't eat at restaurant as we preferred to eat out in town, but they were happy to bring us drinks by the pool. Liked staying in Santiago - the whole freak street traveller vibe in San Pedro wasn't for us. We liked being in a proper Mayan town, near market, restaurants, bars, but lovely to come back to island of peace at Tiosh Abaj. Read some of the less complimentary reviews - sure there is a slight air of fading grandeur about the place but for the price it was great.

Our stay at Hotel Arca de Noé was absolutely wonderful! The location is unbeatable, right on the shores of Lake Atitlán, offering breathtaking views of the water and surrounding volcanoes. Waking up to such a stunning panorama was a highlight of our trip. The rooms are cozy and comfortable, creating a peaceful retreat. The ecolodge Mayachik was perfect. Really pretty place, surounded by nature and quite quiet. The room was clean and the blankets kept us really warm (we travelled in January). Also the bathroom were close to our room, almost private and clean. A big plus was their restaurant that serves good food for a really affordable price ! You'll find plenty of vegetales ;). They really care about ecology.

We enjoyed San Pedro. it was picturesque with the beautiful lake and mountains. It was walkable, also easy to get a TukTuk. If you walk up the hill into the village, you get past the tourist streets and see local life. There are plenty of restaurants and shops. Many of the restaurants had seating that looked out over the lake. The souvenir market sellers are not pushy. We went to a Mayan museum, Tzunun' Ya'. It was informative about the formation of the lake and the traditional life of the Mayan people. We didn't see sandy beach areas to throw out a blanket and sit by the lake.

We were a group of six over 55's off on a great adventure. San Juan la laguna gave us so many things to do and see. we hired a local guide to talk to us about the spectacular murals and artist in town. we hiked the mirador. toured a honey farm. enjoyed serval meals. One that stands out was the Cafe Alma De Colores. it promotes social inclusion of people with disabilities. they also have a wonderful gift shop, with handcrafted items that support this population. visiting the street of sombras and the steert of umberellas. The town is up a steep hill so be prepared for some exercise or take a tuk tuk! Gorgeous views! Take a cooking class there like we did! Laid back town, not a lot to do or many restaurants, but a more authentic town that supports its Mayan locals with local wares and cuisines.

The market is fabulous for fibery things.

The market is fabulous for fibery things. Backstrap looms, cotton weaving yarn, and finished yardage and garments. NOT touristy, hard to find coffee before ten a.m., and very little English-speaking. It's a noisy and bustling center for locals (rural Mayans). The shops and the market are a bonanza if you are a fiber tourist. If you're looking for an idyllic green and quiet oasis on the lake, you need to look to the outskirts of town, or hop on a ferry to one the many smaller, more tourist oriented communities

As a former coffee buyer, I've been fortunate enough to experience a wide range of beautiful countries throughout the world, and Guatemala is my absolute favorite. I wanted to take my wife to see this beautiful country for the first time on our 25th anniversary, and fortunately, we landed upon El Picnic! It seems evident to me that this is absolutely the best place to stay in Atitlan. Because the temperatures are consistently cool in the evenings year round with 13-17C (57-62F) at night, the glamping experience of sleeping outside is a no-brainer! The places to stay at El Picnic are beautifully elegant and very impressive architecturally. One of the things I often worry about with AirBnb's and glamping resorts is whether or not they have good bedding and mattresses; no concern with this place, we had a great bed, it was super comfortable with a very charming bathroom as well. You would be hard pressed to wake up to a better view anywhere else in the world. View and comfort aside, Jochen and Gaby are excellent hosts. Gaby was very helpful in arranging transport and providing useful tips in visiting surrounding areas; Jochen is an exceptional chef, mixologist and baker. I can go on and on about the outstanding cuisine, coffee, rum cocktails and fresh baked bread with every meal! Suffice to say, we will be coming back next year. The guests were a pleasure to meet and get to know as well, places like this always seem to attract interesting and fun people. El Picnic has an awesome culture, it's conviviality at its finest!
