The Vatican

The world’s smallest state is also one of its most attraction-packed spots. As the centre of the Catholic Church, Vatican City is chock-full of awe-inspiring religious architecture and artistic treasures. Must-sees include the imposing St Peter’s Basilica – so vast that the Statue of Liberty could fit comfortably under its dome – and the mesmerising frescoes of the Sistine Chapel.

If you want to see the Sistine Chapel , just be prepared that you're going to spend four times as much time getting there parading through the Vatican museum , which has all sorts of stuff that I didn't necessarily associate with the Vatican.

You pay hefty amount to get treated like cattle. You can barely walk inside the museum as there are 1000s of people in the same room as you. In case of an emergency, you will probably be injured, or even worse. Its only about the Vatican making money.

A huge collection of just about everything - much more than Versailles or Ermitage ... But the main thing is the one that they won't let you take pictures of - in Sistine chapel Michelangelo drew God from behind - showing naked butt. Bold move - not just by Michelangelo, but also from the Church's point of view for allowing it. Opens up a whole new chapter of what Church is about ...

Loved my stay at Mariasole’s place! The apartment is cozy and very well equipped and in a great location, very close to the Vatican. Mariasole was really friendly and helpful, which made everything easy. I’d recommend it to anyone coming to Rome and would definitely stay here again!

Anita’s house was a little surprise packet. Comfortable pull out bed, well equipped kitchen and good size bathroom with a great shower. Ruggero met us and showed us all of the apartments facilities including the amazing deck area with views to the Vatican. He s as Leo helped us to organise our airport transfer and gave tips on being in Rome. Supermarket just across the road and some lovely restaurant options, metro station only a 10 min walk away.

The host, Ruggero, was very friendly and helpful. When I come back to Rome, this will be the first hotel I stay at. Thank you, Ruggero. Ciao!

Clean, comfortable and well kitted-out. Friendly owner who provided lots of useful information. The view from the roof terrace is amazing - you can look East over the whole of the centre of Rome. There are lots of embassies nearby and the area is quiet. Easy to walk into the centre or to the Vatican, but the apartment is up a bit of a hill - check the terrain will suit if you want to walk.

The guest, Petro, was very responsive and helpful when needed. The apartment is next to the train station and close to the Saint Peter's Square and the Vatican museum (approx. 30 minutes walking). You can also take a bus to visit Rome's attractions and return walking, it's enjoyable! We had a really good sleep and the apartment was clean, a good size balcony, the kitchen has the basics you'll need, but there is no storage space for the clothes, except a rack. Yet, that was ok for us.

The apartment was beautiful, large and confortable for our family. The location was perfect, walking distance to the Vatican and easy metro ride to downtown Rome. We also liked that fact that the building had an enclosed garden area where our kids could play safely. The breakfast items available, with bread, cereal, juice, coffee, milk, etc were high appreciated and a very nice tough! We highly recommend and we would definetly come back. Thank you for everything!

Emanuele, the owner, is a true host, always kind and available. I’ve been to Rome hundreds of times, but I’ve never felt so at home. The apartment is perfect, tastefully decorated, comfortable, and ideally located for visiting the Vatican and the main tourist spots in Rome. You get to enjoy the city without being stuck in the chaos of the more touristy areas or ending up in misleading accommodations. Highly recommended and I’ll definitely be back!

We had a wonderful stay at Gallo’s Holidays St Peter. The communication with the host was excellent – she was very kind, helpful, and always quick to reply. The apartment was spotlessly clean, well-kept, and exactly as described in the listing. The area is quiet and safe, yet just a short 5–10 minute walk from the Vatican. There are also train and bus connections nearby, which makes it very easy to get around Rome. We truly enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend this place to others.

check out the hotels for your ideal location, you get very good value for money from smaller hotels/ bed and breakfast/ guest houses etc. Use the hop on hop off buses, buy tickets to the main tourist attractions in advance, unless you like to wait in line a lot! Vatican is manic, I went in March and it was starting to get busy, I can imagine it would be very hot and uncomfortable in the height of the season.

If you take the time to go through the streets north of the Vatican you can find many small stores where the locals shop. As well as the popular brands and designer labels these streets are full of market stalls with lots of bargains and lovely small deli's and cafes that sell many wonderful local goodies. Great restaurants in this area too, well worth spending a few hours of the day finding a treasure or two.

Get a 48-hour pass on one of the "hop on, hop off"...

Get a 48-hour pass on one of the "hop on, hop off" sightseeing bus services. Many of them also offer "skip the line" tickets for certain sights. These tickets are worth every cent. There are tourists waiting in long lines everywhere, which will waste a lot of your time and energy. Rome is an intense tourist destination with much to see. Plan well, do research and be prepared to spend extra on special services. You will need at least 5 days to a week to truly see most of the major landmarks. Just the Vatican Museum offers so much that you could easily spend 3 days inside and still not truly see most of it.

As it's Rome there will always be tourists everywhere but DO NOT go with any tour group guaranteeing to skip lines, the queues are never as bad as they look. We were told a "5 hour queue for Vatican and the Sistine chapel" but if we joined a tour we can go straight in...for a €50 fee. We opted out and queued and were in and out of the Vatican, Vatican museum and Sistine Chapel within 2.5 hours all for a quarter of the price (student and EU citizen discounts). The same goes for the colosseum. Go at your own pace and avoid the scammers. The hotel had basic tourist maps which were perfect and we easily found our way. But we did find there were always less people between 12-1 as they had gone to find food by then.

The Colisseum and the Vatican are probably the main attractions, but there are dozens of monuments, museums, gallaries, fountains and churches that all offer a piece of ancient or modern history. Even the roads and walls and buildings seem to tell a story about one of the most preserved ancient cities in the world.
