On the southeastern shore of the Laconian Gulf, 115 kilometers from the capital of Sparta, is the seaside town of Neapoli. The most southern town of mainland Greece is located on the Voiai ancient city, in a calm and wind sheltered bay. While its maritime tradition is still much in evidence, Neapoli has also grown to become a popular holiday destination with clean, beautiful beaches. There are numerous cafes, bars and restaurants specializing in seafood, including the local speciality, grilled octopus. Villages, that have retained much of their original character, are spread out along the surrounding mountainsides. Passenger ferries connect Neapoli with Kythera island and Elafonisos, as well as with the western shore of the Peloponnese. Neapoli has also port facilities for visiting yachts.
