When you walk through the door of the Winchester, it's obvious how hard the owners work. It looks amazing. Our room was big, very clean, not a spec of dust, and the one thing I always find at hotels is a really uncomfortable bed. But not at the...

Greg and Sam are wonderful owners, they take great care of their guests. Everyday Sam had baked something for everyone. Breakfast was very good. The hotel has a limited amount of rooms, therefore it was nice and peaceful. Very close to the beach.

Company information

We bought The Winchester in 2004. After leaving school I completed a 2 year course in Business and Finance before starting work. I worked in industry as an accountant and production control manager. Whilst working I did a four year accountancy course. My wife, Sam, also worked in industry (we met at work) before becoming a full-time mother to our two sons, Gary and Tom. Later Sam worked in schools and was a teaching assistant before we moved to Great Yarmouth.

Property information

The Winchester was originally a private residence, built in 1882 by J.W. Cockrill, who was the towns leading designer. It was extended in 1898 when the main entrance was moved from the side to the front. The newer section is from the main entrance to the conservatory and incorporates the magnificent fireplace. Many of the original features still remain today. In 1948 started to trade as a guest house and in 1950 named the Winchester Private Hotel. In June 2013 a Blue Plaque was presented as recognition of the importance of J.W. Cockrill's work to the Borough of Great Yarmouth.

Neighbourhood information

Great Yarmouth is a fascinating town. It is a traditional seaside resort but has a rich heritage, particularly, in fishing. It has strong maritime links; Lord Nelson moored off the coast and some of his crew came to shore. There is something to do for all ages, both by day and by night. Central beach is vast and sandy, ideal for a lazy family day. There are many different styles of cuisine and during the summer why not take in a show? It is also the gateway to the Broads; an extensive network of rivers and manmade lakes. Come and see what it has to offer!
