The scent of lemon coming from the incredible garden, the restaurant with DELICIOUS dishes prepared with the utmost care, the extremely friendly and polite staff, the Wi-Fi signal, the comfort of the bed, the temperature, the shower, the careful lighting, the spectacular and comfortable bed linen, in every little detail EVERYTHING was WONDERFUL!!! Been on my bucket list since studying Classical Studies at school. It did not disappoint. Steeped in history and you get a real feel for the terror those people experienced when Vesuvius erupted. I climbed to the crater so peaceful now hard to believe it caused such destruction. Seeing the House of the Faun made my day at Pompeii. Herculaneum was as impressive but smaller and easy to navigate. Pompeii is huge and it was hot with no shade this makes getting around in the crowds a little more challenging.

Since childhood, I was fascinated with Pompei. The ruins would take a couple of days to completely absorb as the ruins are much larger than imagined from photos. The vistas were incredible. Every facet of the exploration brought new life to what was once a truly vibrant city.

I visited Pompeii in early October and whilst busy, I was reliably informed that it’s quiet compared to peak summer months. Definitely worth visiting and I’d recommend a guide if you can. So much to see and you should allow a good 3hrs+ to see the whole site. There’s a lot of walking to do and if you’re unsteady on your feet, that will limit some of the things you can see at the site. I’d also strongly recommend you take water with you. It’s hot work even in October. I also visited Herculaneum, which is much smaller but is in many ways, a better preserved site. You’ll see the second floor on many buildings. That said, you get a real feel for how big Pompeii was back in the day. Which is better? Pompeii for me based upon the sheer scale, variety of buildings and the wonder you get of how well developed the Romans were back in 79AD. I’d also say that the surroundings outside of the UNESCO World Heritage site are a whole lot better than Herculaneum.

Lovely town with great resturants and the Archaeological site of Pompeii , plus 3 train stations which allowed travel to Herculaneum, Sorrento, Naples and Salerno and the Amalfi Coast. A great central location. We used the beaches at Vico Esquerence as they were a lot cleaner that those at Castlemmare Di Stabi, but we did food shopping at Lidl there and the shopping Center in Pompeii was a treat.

Download the App for the Pompeii site, with map, info and audio guides; so very easy for DIY tourists. The buses to Mt Vesuvius a little bit confused. Fare varies but not by a significant amount. Stops not clear but Pompei is a small city and so manageable as a DIY trip.

Pompei archeological park was amazing.

Pompei archeological park was amazing. I was unprepared for the sheer scale of the city. I think you need a minimum of 2 days to really explore the ruins alone. Modern Pompei I did not like. It is noisy and there is nothing pleasant at all.

The pool was a real bonus, especially the swallows comind down to drink! It is but a short walk to the Pompeii archaeological site, it's almost as though we were living there! We absolutely loved our stay at Villa Ettore! We both agreed that this was the nicest place we stayed during our trip to Italy by far. The room was beautiful and much bigger than our suite in Maiori that cost twice as much. The owner was very kind and knowledgeable about the area. We loved his close the place was to both the train station and the ruins. We would definitely stay there again.

The location was great as we were exploring Italy so was handy for getting down to the Amalfi Coast, up to Naples and visiting the ruins. The property itself was quite big for two people, very clean and very comfortable. Great having a pool on site and staff were all very friendly.
