Really nice comfortable stay. Spacious room, nicely decorated, with a big comfortable bed and a clean, modern ensuite bathroom. Lots of options provided to make yourself a cuppa which was appreciated. Easy self check in and self check out. Lovely communicative host. A few continental breakfast items available in the room - please note the cafe downstairs (independent from the guesthouse) has pretty limited hours so early risers need not plan to eat breakfast there

Apart from an unavoidable (old protected building) trek up and down the stairs with luggage, this hotel (and PS it IS a hotel, not motel - no cars around, and CERTAINLY no sheets that would cringe at the sight of a UV light) is superb. The welcome is efficient and relaxed, with hushed mood lighting in the beautiful reception offering immediate relief from the frenzy that York often presents. The rooms are small (opening large luggage is a little challenging unless it's on the bed) but spectacularly appointed, and the little luxe touches made me feel like Richard Branson had designed the space - buttons where they need to be, built-in lights in the mirrors that offer warm and cool lighting, heavy crystal glasses on the gorgeously decorated shelf, wonderful robes and slippers, stunning decor, and of course, with the room I chose, a very cleverly-designed (and music-playing) hot tub on the patio - along with nest chairs. This was exactly what I needed after a long two days of trans-Atlantic travel and sightseeing in York. I almost cancelled the next part of my trip to stay on because it was THAT good. The cocktail bar and restaurant were also impressive, and obviously also beautifully decorated. Service throughout was friendly, helpful, and just overall, very 'hygge'. I will be back - especially since they offer returning-customers some extra benefits. Oh, and it's location made it an easy walk from the train station and PERFECT as a central base for sightseeing around York. You're right in the middle of it. Highly recommended.

FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

I had forgotten how beautiful York is because I last visited years ago. With lots to do and see and plenty of pubs, bars and restaurants. We also witnessed a beautiful wedding which was unexpected but I'm mit surprised they choose York and Malmaison

York is a great place to visit especially if you like history. Easy to walk around and plenty to see. Lots of lovely places to eat and drink. If you like shopping there’s a good designer outlet which is a short drive away, or can be reached by bus. Definitely worth a visit or several.

Walkable town with excellent bus system.

Walkable town with excellent bus system. We came to walk the city walls and tour the Minster. The Treasurer's House tour was fascinating. We enjoyed the river, the parks, and the plethora of cask ales. The Castle Museum was dated. The city is known for stag and hen parties, but it is also very kid and dog friendly. There's even an adventure planned fot cat people. We enjoyed reading mystery series set in York, especially Inspector Shadow.

The Minster guides and guided tours are really helpful and informative. They point out all sorts of features one might miss otherwise. Go to see the Treasurer's House behind the Minster for a quirky and interesting house tour, lovely garden and a nice cafe with good soup and scones. The Merchant Adventurer's Hall right across the road from our rental property was new to me and well worth a visit with a nice not too crowded cafe and garden too.

Our room was well appointed with a very comfortable bed, nice towels and a big bathroom. The buffet breakfast had a wide choice of good food. The location was just off a main road into York, but the hotel was quiet and had nice gardens facing the race course. It also had a well served bus stop just outside the door, giving easy access to York city centre.
